I would like to take the opportunity, in this ACB diamond Jubilee year, to welcome you to Focus 2013 and to York, the heart of Yorkshire. A first for Focus in York and a first for Focus at a University campus.
York is a beautiful historic city renowned for its exquisite architecture, tangle of cobbled streets and the iconic York Minster. York offers so many unique things to see and do that there is plenty to entice you to explore so plan to stay an extra day or two! Norman, Viking and Medieval heritage abounds. There are several museums, including the National Railway Museum where we will hold the conference banquet, the famous city walls, boat trips on the River Ouse and the Castle Museum whose prison once housed the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. Shopping in York cannot be beaten; fabulous shops in a web of cobbled streets. There is also a vibrant cafe culture and an abundance of riverside restaurants and bars providing you with the opportunity to network and socialise with colleagues in beautiful surroundings.
York University Campus is ideally sited close to the city centre and provides an excellent conference centre where all lecture facilities are in close proximity in an area integrated with the corporate exhibition. There is on-site cost effective accommodation, access to a variety of sports facilities and on-site facilities for a memorable corporate members evening.
As diagnosis and treatment of the patient becomes ever more challenging and complex with a heavy reliance on laboratory medicine we have chosen, for Focus 2013, to go 'back to basics'. The scientific programme is wide ranging and varied with some fundamental and current issues being considered. Topics covered include clinical pathways, clinical efficiencies and current topics in endocrinology and biomarkers. We will also focus on the fundamental relationship we have with our primary care providers.
On behalf of the organising committee I look forward to extending a warm Yorkshire welcome to you at the University of York in April. The ACB will be 60 years old - so please come and join in the science and celebrations that will make Focus 2013 one to remember.
